LISTENING

Los Angeles

March 2017

Thursday. Supporting people who are going through something this prolonged and dramatic is not straightforward. They are facing a radical, permanent, and sudden change in their life trajectory and life story. They have so much to absorb and so many feelings that must come along with it. How can you show up for people existing with that kind of intensity, that kind of life-in-your-face situation, without being annoying? Wouldn’t anything you say be irritating just because you don’t have to deal with this?

This week at Linda’s house, I hold back from talking a lot or trying to be clever. I try to be still. I work to manage my own agitation and not to fuss over others just to comfort myself. This involves a lot of noticing and breathing. Then again, people need to connect with other real people. Wouldn’t they want to feel that someone could at least see them and someone at least cared? Maybe I’m too aloof. Maybe I should be more talkative. No, maybe I should . . . I don’t know. I meditate in the morning and sometimes during the day on Lise’s red-and-yellow Tibetan zafu.
